Ontario Swift Watch is a program of Bird Studies Canada aimed at determining the status of the endangered Chimney Swift In Ontario. As Swift Watch coordinators in Northumberland County we are seeking your help in monitoring several sites we have identified in Brighton, Colborne and Cobourg, and in identifying as many other nesting or roosting sites as we can.
In Colborne in particular, we have found 5 active nesting chimneys. These can all be conveniently watched from a single "deck-chair" location. But we do not currently have the manpower to provide the coverage. Since there are eggs in the nests now, fledging is unlikely before early August. Over the next 3 to 4 weeks, we would like to have as continuous monitoring as can be organised. Minimum shifts of one hour are proposed, during which several entrance and exit events should be observed. The pay is non-existent but the rewards are unlimited and the information obtained is priceless. If anyone is willing to assist us in this worthwhile endeavour, please contact either Colin Griffiths ([email protected]) or Maureen Campeau ([email protected]). We will fill you in on the information we have accumulated thus far and will meet you at the monitoring site. ================= Remember the Lorax.
