A WESTERN MEADOWLARK was seen and heard on the morning of the 21st on the NE
corner of Lockhead Rd East and 3rd Line Rd SW of Kars. Unfortunately it was not
subsequently found.
Two local birders helped a British raptor ethologist who works for BirdLife
International in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, search for raptors on the
23rd. He reported;
2 Merlin - separate sightings of flying falcons.
4 American Kestrel - all adult males, including two flying together above
grassland meadows.
2 Peregrine Falcon - adult female and juvenile at urban nest site.
29+ Turkey Vulture, including 7 loafing together in adjacent trees.
11+ Red-tailed Hawk - perched on trees and pylons, and later soaring.
10+ Northern Harrier (5+ males and 5 females) including a male carrying a prey
item.
5 Osprey - including individuals at two separate nests.
2 Bald Eagle - adult and fully-grown youngster in nest in large emergent tree.
2 Broad-winged Hawk - individuals soaring separately.
1 Red-shouldered Hawk(?) - probably juvenile of this species soaring high.
Totals = 68+ raptors of 10 species.
A YELLOW-THROATED VIREO was heard on the 20th and 21st in the woods on the
north side of Klondike Rd just west of March Valley Rd.
As a result of the extremely high water level on area rivers, creeks, ponds and
marshes BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON are being seen seeking shallow water in
unusual locations. One was reported on the 22nd in a Stittsville back yard
"fish pond" and on the 23rd one was seen in the ditch at the side of the hwy 7
Stittsville access ramp.
GREAT EGRET continue to be seen on the Ottawa River shoreline, on Conroy Island
in the Deschenes Rapids and at Mud Lake in the Britannia Conservation area.
Interesting sightings;
- CASPIAN TERN (1) at the Moodie Dr ponds just south of Trail Rd on the 20th
- BLACK TERNS (5) at Petrie Island on the 20th and (1) on the 22nd
- WOOD THRUSH (3) were heard along Sand Rd east of Carlsbad Springs on the 23rd
