I led an outing with fellow members of Kawartha Field Naturalists, last evening
to do spring inspections on our Chimney Swift Towers In Fenelon Falls. Sadly,
there was no evidence that they had roosted or nested in either tower. There
were three Swifts actively hunting over the downtown area, much more interested
in the abundant gnats and blackflies swarming around our heads, than the sound
of the flight and mating calls we played to them from a hand held tape
recorder, fitted with a pocket sized speaker.

Today, there were eight or nine swifts hunting over the downtown area in
Lindsay.

Over the past week, Purple Martins have returned to their favourite nesting
apartment houses on a neighbour’s property in the Southview Estates in Cameron
and a House Wren was heard singing his bubbly tune from my pine tree.

Cheers,
Judy Kennedy
