This afternoon after 2:00 pm a Northern Shrike was observed east of the
parking lot at Col. Sam Smith Park. The shrike was present in the tops
of tall aspens, singing actively during sunny intervals between snow
showers. The bird was observed making two unsuccessful hunting dives.
The shrike disappeared about 4:00 pm after being dive-bombed by a male
American Kestrel who was also hunting various parts of the park.
Colonel Sam Smith Park is due south of Kipling Avenue in Etobicoke.
Cross Lakeshore Boulevard and continue to the parking lot at the end of
the road. The parking lot today was not filled with student cars from
Humber College, as is the common situation on weekdays.
