The Carleton Place CBC was held on Dev 27th, the day of the second biggest snow
storm in the area this winter. Despite the cold wind and snow and the flu
suffered by some observers the CP CBC went ahead. There were 29 field
observers and 28 feeder reports resulting in a total of 4900+ individual birds
which is way down from last year at 7500+ and most years. A lot of the large
flocks were sheltering from the weather and the Geese had just flown south.
Despite this there were some highlights and some records set and tied. There
were 56 species in all - up 6 from the all time high in 1984 of 50 There were 4
Hoary Redpolls. a record. 18 White-throated Sparrows, a record, and records
tied for Great Blue Heron and Peregrine at 1 each. As well there was 1 Hermit
Thrush, a new species for the CP CBC. The single largest species were Common
Redpolls at 1100+! cheers to all and best wishes for 2013. special big year
congrats to Kevin at 301, Josh at 344, Andrew at not sure but I think around 330
