The Hawk Owl was visible from Hwy 7 this morning, sitting on the hydro wires right where hwy 7 passes over the old railway bed which is now a trail. This a few hundred metres north of the intersection of Hwy 7 with Meadowview Road. The Western Tanager was still present this afternoon at 2:40 P.M., when it was at the west end of the fence that separates the houses from the park. It spent time up in a buckthorn eating the berries, and as low as 1 foot off the ground. Disconcertingly, a juvenile Coopers Hawk was also present in the same woods. From 401 take exit # 415 to Stephenson Road North in Oshawa. Turn left (west) on Gibb Street (first light after the railway overpass) then turn left (south) on Waverly Street (at the pedestrian cross walk lights). It is a quiet residential street with limited parking at the dead end where the park is located. Finally, there was a Black Scoter on the lake at the foot of Mill Street in Bond Head (Exit 440 from Hwy 401, a few kilometres east of the Hwy 35 to Peterborough turn-off), and two Great Blue Herons are still hanging around the mouth of the Rouge River. _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization.
