A first winter IVORY GULL was found on the ice of the Madawaska River Arnprior
Dam headwater lake on the 15th. The bird was seen until dusk but was not
subsequently found. Although still under review it is believed that when this
bird was seen flying over the south east corner of Madawaska Lake it became the
first ever record of an IVORY GULL in the Ottawa area.

The first winter male HARLEQUIN DUCK continues to be seen on the Ottawa River
rapids north of Bate Island just east of the Champlain Bridge. Yesterday, and
once before on the 9th, another first winter male HARLEQUIN DUCK was seen on
the east end of the Deschenes Rapids at the same time that one was in view from
Bate Island.

COMMON REDPOLL continue throughout the Ottawa/Gatineau area. HOARY REDPOLL (5)
were found during the Ottawa Christmas Bird Count (CBC) on the 16th. Flocks of
BOHEMIAN WAXWING continue to be seen throughout our area, a flock of 100 were
seen in the Fallingbrook area of Orleans on the 15th. PINE GROSBEAK (8) were
seen over Baseline and Merivale Roads on the 18th.

Other interesting sighting were;
- BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER (1 female and occasionally 1 male) are being seen
regularly in the Stony Swamp trails area and 1 was seen near the pond on trail
56 at Ramsay Lake on the 15th
- BARROW'S GOLDENEYE (1 or 2 adult male) are being seen regularly on the Rideau
River between Riverrain Park and the Hurdman bridge
- GLAUCOUS and ICELAND Gulls were reported from a number of locations this week
- late RED-THROATED (2) and COMMON (1) LOON were found during the Ottawa CBC on
the 16th
