Brian Ahara called to say that yesterday he and Manley Baarda found a near breeding plumaged male King Eider at Port Weller in St. Catharines. The bird was found at the tip of the east pier near the small light beacon.
A breeding plumaged King Eider has been observed at Port Weller for an extended period over the past 2 winters? Hard to tell but this bird might well be the same individual returning for a third winter. In the same area is a very colourful male Harlequin Duck as well. This bird has been observed now for some 17 days....hopefully they will both remain for the Niagara Falls CBC on the 27th. Directions: Exit the Queen Elizabeth Highway in St. Catharines at Niagara Street. Proceed north to the T intersection at Lakeshore Road. Turn right here and drive east a ΒΌ mile past the Lock 1 bridge of the Welland Canal to Seaway Haulage Road. Turn left, cross over Broadway Avenue and continue on Seaway Haulage Road (as it parallels the Welland Canal) to the barrier that stops all traffic. Park here (off to the side) and walk out the center gravel path to the tip (1 km). Once there look to your right and you will see the small light beacon. Kayo Kayo Roy 13 Kinsman Court. Fonthill, ON.
