Greetings, There has been a noticeable movement of finches in the past week in Haliburton. All the following were observed along the Drag River, just E of the village of Haliburton:
Pine Grosbeak - 1 individual observed and at least 1 heard calling overhead Evening Grosbeak - 1 female observed Common Redpoll - small flock calling overhead, 1 individual observed at feeder Pine Siskin - a large flock of 40+ birds appeared last weekend, then most moved on; still about 10 birds lingering at feeder Northern Cardinal - 1 pair showed up suddenly last week and stayed until at least Wednesday. They may still be hanging around. This is still a very uncommon species here. White-winged Crossbill - small flock in cedars along the Drag River E of town ....along with the usual migrants or locals....Juncos, Tree Sparrows, a late White-crowned Sparrow, Purple Finch, American Goldfinches. Yesterday, while driving toward gelert, I also had 3 Waxwing sp. fly across the road. Couldn't get a good look as I was driving but I suspect they were Bohemians. The village of Haliburton is located near the south tip of Algonquin Park, along Hwy 118. The above birds were observed along Riverside Dr., E of the village. Cheers, Ed Poropat Haliburton _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization.
