Weather: The day started out dry but with heavy overcast conditions and very poor light. Before the end of the first hour, drizzle set in and was pretty constant until about 40 minutes into the second hour, when the drizzle upgraded (or downgraded depending on one's point of view) to light rain. Temp got to 6C. Raptor Observations: Things were pretty quiet throughout the morning...but a few birds managed to migrate through. Total birds for the day was 39...TVs (24), Sharpies (7), Cooper's (1) and Goshawk (1)...and Redtails (6). A few TVs got up and moving about midway through the first hour, laboring to get some altitude. All headed westward over the ravine, some barely skimming the treetops. Sharpies were also down low, passing south of Sharpie Alley and the single Coop blasted across the field and through the trees about halfway between Sharpie Alley and the ravine. Ditto on the Gos that blew through at about 11:15. Non-raptor Observations: Things were pretty quiet, although there was some action back and forth across the road near the Alley. Chickadees and a Golden-crowned Kinglet were foraging in weeds nearby and the Pileated Woodpecker put in an appearance, then called from the tree lot across the field for a while. Also seen were Red-bellied and Downy Woodpeckers and approximately 40 Cedar Waxwings. Around 11:00 AM observers at Sharpie Alley were joined by 12 Eastern Bluebirds cavorting in the field in front of us, and perched, singing, in the trees to just to our left. Other non-raptor highlights included 16 Loons and a Kingfisher. A walk to the Cliff yielded some Juncos, a Ruby-crowned Kinglet, a few Goldfinches and more Chickadees along the way and 3 species of Sparrow just south of the parking area at the Cliff (Song, White-crowned and White-throated). A few small flocks of Red-winged Blackbirds and a flock of about 30 Crows flew westward along the ravine as the morning progressed. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Dave Brown ([email protected]) Hawk Cliff Hawkwatch information may be found at: http://www.ezlink.on.ca/~thebrowns/HawkCliff/index.htm _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization.
