Hi all,
The Hudsonian Godwit is still at Gosport (south of Brighton on
Presqu'ile Bay) as of 2 p.m. In addition to the godwit there are 5
Greater and 2 Lesser yellowlegs, 25 Pectoral Sandpiper, 160 Dunlin and
one dowitcher. This dowitcher was a bit too far away to see fine
details of the tertials, although I think based on structure and what
I could see of the tertials that it is a Long-bill (as would be
expected at this date), however it is very bright in overall colour.
If I had seen it in August I would have assumed it was Short-billed
based on the overall colour alone. Yesterday when I was looking at
the godwit I thought I had heard a Long-bill calling but never saw the
bird. Hopefully some one can get a better look at this bird or hear
it calling to confirm the ID.
Cheers,
Doug McRae
Directions: From Brighton go south on Prince Edward Street (the main
N/S road from downtown), over the railway tracks. Follow the road as
it swings left and just before you get to the Constructed Wetland,
turn right on to Harbour St. Follow Harbour for a few hundred meters
and turn left on Baldwin St. Follow Baldwin St. south into Gosport.
Turn left on to Price Street (at ball diamond) and follow to the very
end. Walk east along the mowed path and stand on the tip of land.
The shorebirds are on the mudflats to the north, between 700-1000m
away so a scope is essential. Today the godwit was closer, being
visible just behind the docks of the Presqu'ile Yacht Club (Private
property).
