Quebec Compiler & transcriber Bob Cermak [email protected] or [email protected] A WESTERN GREBE, found on the 16th continues to be seen today on the Ottawa River between the Deschenes rapids and the Champlain Bridge. The bird has been seen well by many birders from the boat launch at the end of Rue Houle and from the shore south of the Ch Rivermead and Boul Lucerne (lower Aylmer road) intersection. It has also been seen from the south side of the river from the Deschene Lookout on the Ottawa River Parkway. The bird appears to favour the north side of the Ottawa River. This species, possibly the same bird, was first seen in the Ottawa area last year on October 23 at the same location. Shirleys Bay; - SURF (up to 5), BLACK (1) and WHITE-WINGED (up to 3) SCOTERS - HORNED (up to 9), numbers of RED-NECKED and occasionally PIED-BILLED (up to 2) GREBES - BUFFLEHEAD (up to 20) and RED-BREASTED MERGANSER - numbers of COMMON and 1 female BARROW'S GOLDENEYE - increasing numbers of LESSER and GREATER SCAUP - a very late ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK was heard singing on the 13th Andrew Haydon and Ottawa Beach; - BRANT (up to 300) - BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER (1) on the 12th - RED-BREASTED MERGANSER - increasing numbers of CANADA GEESE Britannia Conservation Area; - AMERICAN WIGEON (up to 40) and HOODED MERGANSERS on Mud Lake - numbers of YELLOW-RUMPED all week and in the woods TENNESSEE WARBLER (1) on the 12th Russell lagoons; - RED-NECKED PHALAROPE (1) continued to be present on the 13th - BARROW'S GOLDENEYE (pair) and SURF SCOTER (1) on the 16th Bruce Pit on the 16th; - HOODED MERGANSER (8) - NORTHERN PINTAIL (4) Moodie Dr Pit (Burnside Pit); - SNOW (up to 15) and hundreds of CANADA GEESE - REDHEAD (3) on the 17th Baie Noire Ouest west of Plaisance, Quebec has had thousands of waterfowl all week; - AMERICAN COOT (100+) - AMERICAN (500+) and EURASIAN (up to 2 males seen from the picnic table). Pay $6 fee at trail head parking area off of hwy 148, follow trail to the Ottawa River, after the foot bridge turn right and search Baie Noire on the right up to the first picnic table which is about 3 km from the parking area - numbers of NORTHERN SHOVELER, COMMON GALLINULE, PIED-BILLED GREBE, CANADA GEESE, RED-BREASTED MERGANSERS, MALLARD, WOOD, RING-NECKED, and BLACK DUCKS In Pakenham; - EVENING GROSBEAK (up to 13) and flocks of PINE SISKIN (up to 60) in Pakenham all week - GOLDEN EAGLE (1 adult) and RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER (1) today Other interesting sighting were; - OSPREY (1) and LONG-TAILED DUCK (1 adult male in winter plumage) in Carlton Place today - NELSON'S SPARROW (5) and SORA (1) at the mouth of Constance Creek in Constance Bay on the 11th - EASTERN BLUEBIRDS (12) on and around Thomas Dolan - AMERICAN TREE SPARROWS (up to 20) were reported at a number of locations - numbers of DARK-EYED JUNCO were seen at many locations - FOX SPARROW (1) on the Jack Pine Trail on the 14th - RED-EYED VIREO (1) on Bate Island on the 17th - a very late VIRGINIA RAIL (1) at Stony Swamp on the 17th - BARROW'S GOLDENEYE (1 immature male) west of the Champlain bridge from the Chaudiere lookout on the 17th - BROWN-HEADED COWBIRD (200+) at Trail Rd and Cambrian Rd on the 16th - GREAT EGRET (2) on the Sarsaparilla Trail on the 11th - GRAY PARTRIDGE (1) in the conc. 10/11 area on the 12th and (11) on Twin Elm on the 17th Thanks to everyone who contributed bird observations - Good Birding! _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization.
