Weather: Clear blue skies prevailed for much of the day. Some puffy white clouds moved in around midday but those were soon blown from view. There was a slight chill to the air and a brisk breeze out of the southwest in the morning, shifting more to the south in the afternoon. Raptor Observations: It was an active day with several species making a big push, Turkey Vultures chief among them. Bald Eagles exerted their presence once again. Sharp-shinned Hawks were shooting by all day and American Kestrels picked up the pace during the last few hours. Non-raptor Observations: Red-winged Blackbirds (800+) and Tree Swallows (1500+) were moving through all day. Three American Crows rowed by in the morning. Four American Golden-Plovers sped by in the afternoon. Predictions: Mostly sunny with highs in the low 60s and strong wind out of the south. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Jonathan Stein ([email protected]) SMRR- Lake Erie Metropark information may be found at: http://www.drhawkwatch.org Site Description: The primary site used by the Detroit River Hawk Watch (a joint venture of the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge and it's Friends group, the International Wildlife Refuge Alliance) is the Boat Launch at Lake Erie Metropark located approximately 20 miles south of Detroit, Michigan. A secondary site, the Headquarters of Pointe Mouillee State Game Area is used during certain wind conditions. When staffing is available, both sites can be used at the same time. The season begins on the first day of September and concludes on the final day of November. Turn left on West Jefferson and proceed a few hundred yards to the entrance of Lake Erie Metropark.
