Quebec Compiler & transcriber Bob Cermak [email protected] or [email protected] Numbers of geese and sparrows are moving through the Ottawa/Gatineau area. - NELSON'S SPARROW (up to 16 have been reported) continue to be seen (since the 27th) in the short rushes and grasses at the mouth of Constance Creek at Constance Bay. Yesterday morning a LE CONTE'S SPARROW was also seen at that location - many sparrow species were seen on both sides of Graham Creek at Ottawa Beach (also known as Belltown Park) just east of Andrew Haydon Park. NELSON'S (1 on the 29th and 2 on the 30th), SONG, WHITE-THROATED, WHITE-CROWNED, LINCOLN'S and FIELD SPARROWS as well as a SORA were seen at that location. CHIPPING SPARROWS were seen at the Britannia Conservation Area and at the Bruce Pit - a very early GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE found at the Moodie Drive pond (also known as the Burnside pit) south of Trail Road on the 29th was seen again on the 1st and may be still present with the thousands of CANADA GEESE at that location. GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE have been previously seen in this area in September including the 18th (2008), 19th (2009) and 30th (2007) at this location and on the 13th at Andrew Haydon Park in 2009. SNOW GOOSE (15) and LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS were also seen at the Burnside Pit on the 29th and CACKLING GOOSE (4) were seen there on the 1st. Thousands of CANADA and 9 SNOW GEESE were seen at the Casselman lagoon on the 27th A female BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER was found along the Woodland Trail at the back of the woods near the outdoor classroom at the Bill Mason Conservation area on the 29th Britannia Conservation Area was slower this week; numbers of YELLOW-RUMPED and a few PALM WARBLERS, the CAROLINA WREN continues to be heard and seen, DARK-EYED JUNCO (1), SWAINSON'S THRUSH and RUSTY BLACKBIRDS (8 on the 2nd) were seen Tunney's Pasture woodlot; many YELLOW-RUMPED and single BLACKPOLL, NASHVILLE, BLACK-AND-WHITE and TENNESSEE WARBLERS, several BLUE-HEADED VIREOS, both KINGLETS and a SWAINSON'S THRUSH were seen on the 1st Other interesting sighting were; - WILSON'S, COMMON YELLOWTHROAT and AMERICAN REDSTART WARBLERS were added to the list of bird species seen at the Reveler Conservation Area at the intersection of Concession 10/11 Road and Reveler Road over the last 3 weeks - BLACK-THROATED BLUE WARBLER (1) was seen from the Shirleys Bay dyke on the 27th - RED-NECKED and HORNED GREBES are being seen all along the Ottawa River - AMERICAN PIPITS (6) were seen on a ploughed field at Hwy 7 and Cemetery Side Road on the 2nd - BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER (4) and LESSER YELLOWLEGS (7) were seen on the mud flats at Scrivens on the 2nd Thanks to everyone who contributed bird observations - Good Birding! _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization.
