Visitors:
Thanks to Jen for helping on today's count along with Colin, Derek, Chris
(from Waterloo), Tom B, Wayne, Rose and Keith. There were several visitors
today.
Weather:
Winds started very light from the NW...but then swung quickly around to the
SE which pretty much stopped the flight. There was some cloud cover in the
morning which built up as the afternoon wore on. Temp got to a high of
16C.
Raptor Observations:
A typical late September flight with a total of 1,442...the bulk of which
was made up of TVs (859) and Sharpies (377)...with smaller flights of N.
Harriers (30), Broadwings (36), Redtails (94) and Kestrels (38). Also
Osprey (3), Bald Eagles (3) and Cooper's Hawks (2).
Non-raptor Observations:
Warblers: Redstart, Magnolia, Yellow rumps, Blackpoll, Tennesee, Chestnut
sided, Cape May, Indigo Buntings, Common Loon, Common Nighthawk, Blue Jays
(huge numbers in the am-approx 5K), Belted Kingfisher, D.C. Cormorants,
Song Sparrow , Northern Cardinals, Swainson Thrush, Gray Catbird, Tree
Swallows, N. Flicker, Red and White-Breasted Nuthatch, GC & RC Kinglets,
Brown Creeper. Red-eyed Vireo. Non avian observations...Black saddlebags,
Monarchs (saw approx 30) and 4 Deer (Early in the am and close to the mound
on the left side - heard the russling of the soybeans first, then looked up
to see the 4 Deer staring right back at us - Beautiful - they headed for
the forest across the field).
