A small but determined group of intrepid birders braved high winds, rain,
thunder and lightning, and a waterspout to find 66 species yesterday between
Oliphant and Grand Bend, including 17 species of shorebirds:

Plovers: Black-bellied, Golden, Semipalmated
Killdeer
Greater and Lesser Yellowlegs
Sandpipers: Spotted, Semipalmated, Western (1), Least, Baird's, Pectoral,
Stilt, Buff-breasted
Sanderling
Short-billed Dowitcher
Snipe

At one point we could see a wall of rain crossing the lake from Chantry Island
to Horseshoe Bay. At the last moment we jumped back into our cars without
getting soaked and sat out the torrential rain. The morning storm clouds gave
way to beautiful towering white cumulous against the brilliant blue sky around
2 pm.

Everyone had a great day in spite of the weather and we thank the participants
who joined us. Also thanks to Barry and Joanne at Oliphant.

Cindy Cartwright and Maris Apse
