Weather: Light winds today mainly from the E and ENE. Temp a bit cooler wit a high to 22C. A mix of sun and cloud for the entire count period wih good visibility. Raptor Observations: Not a bad flight for September 2nd with a total of 122 birds counted. The nicest surprise today was the Sharpies (74) given there's been very few tallied so far this season. Other species included Osprey (5), N. Harrier (18) which continue to show decent numbers, Cooper's Hawk (2), Kestrels (21) and a couple of Merlin. Not a single Broadwing today...however, Iroquois Shoreline Raptor Watch (north of Whitby) reported almost 800 BW's for Sept 2nd which would seem to indicate that the vanguard for this species is on the move. Non-raptor Observations: Lots of non-raptor highlights to report today and thanks to visitor Sue Southon for her additions to the "dickie bird" list as well as for spotting a Giant Swallowtail (butterfly) which, added to a Variegated Fritillary spotted along the Cliff were the best bugs of the day. Today's highlights included Caspian Tern, Swainson's Thrush, Least & Great-crested Flycatchers, Red-eyed Vireo, Red-breasted & White-breasted Nuthatches in addition to 4 Woodpecker species, Red-bellied, Downy (in several locations) and Hairy Woodpeckers plus Northern Flicker. We seem to be down to a single Swallow species now (Barn) but still in good numbers. With the extra pair of eyes today, we managed to find 13 Warbler species including 3 new for this season; Black-throated Blue, Black-throated Green and Hooded. All were spotted just inside the woods path. Other warblers seen along the Cliff as well as near the woods path were Magnolia, Chestnut-sided, Black & White, Redstart, Nashville, Ovenbird, Mourning, Wilson's, Canada and Common Yellowthroat. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Dave Brown ([email protected]) Hawk Cliff Hawkwatch information may be found at: http://www.ezlink.on.ca/~thebrowns/HawkCliff/index.htm _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization.
