With an eye on the Dowitcher at Scanlon Creek I asked friend Charles to play
the song of
the Short-billed on his i-Pod - not a twitch.
"Play the Long-billed," I said and the bird's head came up, and before
finishing its stitch, it
made towards us across the pond through a gabbling mass of thirty Yellowlegs.
It took mere seconds of playing and when the song stopped, the bird resumed its
foraging.
No more puzzling over books and pics - the Dowitcher was IDed at the press of a
button.
