Jan 15 2012, 1515hrs - On Dec 29 my daughter photographed a Western dark morph Red-tailed Hawk on the eastern border of Oshawa at the 401, hunting the grassy ditches.
We have been keeping an eye out for the bird to reappear. At 3:15pm today I observed a dark bird perched above some grass in exactly the same area as the original bird. At present, I can't confirm ID (didn't have binos or camera) but this one appears to be a lot darker than our normal Red-tails. It was gone when I looped back for a (third) look but indications are there for a repeat sighting. Any help confirming ID would be appreciated, but be warned the area is HIGHWAY zone. There is other access by vehicle or on foot if one is creative. Directions: Highway 401 first 500m east of the Harmony Rd. bridge, Oshawa. Good luck.
