Total observation time: 8 hours
Official Counter: Colin Horstead
Observers: Don Campbell, Eric Jeffery, Eric Single, Jim Dunn, Kathy,
Mary Carnahan, Phil Waggett, Ronnie Goodhand
Visitors:
Thanks to today's counters...Colin, Jim, Eric J., Kathy, Mary, Don C., Eric
S. (with Molly), Ronnie, Phil W. and Tim.
Weather:
Finally, some winds from a northerly direction...even if they were light
for the day, they started from the NW and then back to N for the rest of
the day. There was 100% cloud cover with an ugly grayish sky for the whole
count period and the temp was pretty much steady at 11C. It was a bit hazy
and humidity was high for much of the morning cutting down on the
visibility...but this eventually burned off about midday and the visibility
increased.
Raptor Observations:
Another reasonably good flight for early Nov. with 349 birds total...with
10 different species. A third of today's flight was Redtails (117)...then
good numbers of Red-shoulers (70), Harriers (38), TVs (56) and Sharpies
(49)...and smaller numbers of Cooper's (9), Goshawks (2), Roughlegs (3) and
a lone Kestrel. There were also 4 more Golden Eagles tallied.
Non-raptor Observations:
Not much was stirring at the Cliff this morning, except for an early
Long-eared Owl, spotted by Eric S. About mid-morning things picked up a
bit with many Cedar Waxwings, Robins, and Starlings plus many large flocks
of mixed Blackbirds flying overhead very high. A few Eastern Bluebirds are
still in hanging around and can be heard and seen at both the Cliff and the
B&B. Most other species were quiet although there were 2 noisy Gray
Catbirds in the hollow north of the knoll, some Nuthatch action at the
entrance to the woods with loud trumpeting from both White-breasted and
Red-breasted, although today's lighting conditions made sightings a
challenge. Another nice find in the entrance to the woods was a flock of
at least 8 Yellow-rumped Warblers.
At the B&B, the Killdeer are hanging in and what we assumed was a single
Northern Shrike put in several appearances throughout the morning. A
couple of Common Loons flew over the field as well.
