After being very elusive most of the day, the adult Pacific Loon molting into winter plumage at Oshawa Harbour reappeared at about 3:50 p.m. and remained within good viewing distance until I left at 5:30 p.m. It tended to stay close to the area between the red and green markers.
Thousands of Red-breasted Mergansers, lots of gulls and many loons were following small fish in spectacular feeding frenzies. A fisherman showed us how abundant the shiners (small fish) were in the water off the pier. Photos here: http://www.jeaniron.ca/2011/loonsoshawa.htm Directions: From Highway 401 in Oshawa, east of Toronto, take Simcoe Street south to Lake Ontario. From beach parking lot walk along the pier to the lighthouse. Good birding, Jean Iron Toronto _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization.
