Hello birders. The Purple Gallinule was not to be seen at the Welland Canal Parkway walking trails on Sunday, Oct. 16. Perhaps the stormy winds of the night before had sent it south. There was an American Coot at the pond. In the meantime, there were many other good birds: Eastern Towhee, Ruby Crowned Kinglets, Blackpoll Warblers, Northern Shrike, Brown Creeper. Other birders reported a Veery and a Hermit Thrush. Just to clarify the location of the pond (there are two): walk about 2/3 of the way down the right hand pathway past the white "Danger" sign lying on the ground. On the right you can see a bit of the pond then a space in the trees, then a gravelly open area. The overgrown little path is at the spaced-out trees. There is an arrow scratched out on the ground where the path begins. The gravelly area has another good path with sparrows and leads to the other (smaller) pond. Both areas are worth a look. The Towhee was seen in the bushes off the main trail, around the larger pond.
