Also on hand were Craig Roberts, Calvin Pietila and Margart Van Buren. Thanks to Denise Ward and Frank Kitakis for helping out with outreach. Weather: Another bright and clear day at the park, though a tad bit cooler than yesterday. The wind was out of the northwest for the first couple hours before shifting south for the rest of the day. Raptor Observations: Two early October showstoppers today: the season's first golden eagle and rough-legged hawk. The golden eagle, a subadult that came plodding into view around 1130 am, gave us all a lasting, memorable look, circling high up over the flag pole for a good five minutes before moving on out. The rough-legged hawk, a dark morph that showed up right as we were packing up at the end of the day, hit the trees to our right and was picked up again behind us for a nice look before it disappeared from view. An early October day with either of these species is a grand occurrence but having both on the same day was something special. The day also featured lots more turkey vulture movement, a solid sharpie showing, two more red-shouldered hawks and a new northern harrier season-high daily total. Non-raptor Observations: Not too much besides a big flock of yellow-rumped warblers that was hanging around in the trees near the watch site for a lot of the day. A red-breasted nuthatch was again heard. Killdeers were loud and noticeable. Predictions: It's going to be sunny and clear again. Winds will be out of the east and southeast. Not ideal but neither were the south winds today and we still wound up with a great day. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Jonathan Stein ([email protected]) SMRR- Lake Erie Metropark information may be found at: http://www.drhawkwatch.org Site Description: The primary site used by the Detroit River Hawk Watch (a joint venture of the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge and it's Friends group, the International Wildlife Refuge Alliance) is the Boat Launch at Lake Erie Metropark located approximately 20 miles south of Detroit, Michigan.
