If you need a shorebird fix, it is still possible. I birded High Falls Cons.
Area , just north of Casselman today and stopped by the Casselman Lagoons on my
way home. High falls is an excellent area for shore birds and they are still
plentiful. I do a monthly count so I hope they are still around for Oct. There
was one stilt, one sanderling, 3 pectoral sandpipers, 5 greater yellowlegs, 20
lesser yellowlegs, 2 killdeer, one semi-palmated plover, and a great blue
heron.
Go through Casselman heading north; turn left at the amber light and cross
the bridge. Parking is on the right hand side for the High Falls Cons area.
Walk across the grass and find the path that wends it way beside the river. Go
up to the area with the old piers. You will come to a huge piece of concrete
blocking the way. You have to go up through the woods to get around the huge
piece of concrete. The best viewing is on the north side of this structure.
Walking is pretty easy in most places but be careful; I wore my sandals.
The Lagoons were full of Canada geese; mixed in were 11 snow geese, 3 greater
yellowlegs, 1 lesser and a pair of green -wing teals. Have fun enjoying the
fall birding.
To get to the Lagoons, take Laurie Ave out of Casselman; drive about a
kilometer and you will see the pumping station on the right hand side. Park on
the lane not in front of the gate. Walk to the divider between the lagoons. Bob
