Visitors:
Many visitors today. I hope that all were able to enjoy some of the great
kettles of raptors.
Weather:
7.1-17.2 degrees C. Winds at 10-15 km/hr out of the north/northwest.
Mostly cloudy all day.
Raptor Observations:
A fabulous day for Broad-winged Hawk migration today. The final hours of
the count had multiple large kettles simultaneously throughout the time
period. Some were over Lake Erie, some were overhead, and some were north
over the marsh. At times there was literally what appeared to be a twister
of raptors reaching from overhead streaming birds to birds joining the
bottom of the kettle at the limit of vision to the east.
Non-raptor Observations:
Lots of other birds dropped in overnight, and the bushes and trees around
the tower were hopping, with reports of at least 16 species of warbler.
Among them was a Philadelphia Vireo, and a Yellow-billed Cuckoo flew over
the pond in the morning. A single Red-breasted Nuthatch scooted by. Five
Black-bellied Plovers flew over the marsh early in the morning.
