Today my family and I saw a nice male American Avocet along the beach at Pinery PP. It was by itself on the beach, about 12:30pm and flushed a few times by shoreline walkers. It was about halfway between The Dunes and Burley Beach access parking lots.
Further, yesterday morning a group of three White-winged Crossbills flew over us, calling repeatedly in the Burley Campgrounds near the northern end of it. A calling Merlin yesterday evening had me wondering if it was a locally breeding bird. One last interesting obs was Purple Martins in the large burn going into the Burley campground. I was wondering if they had bred in the snags - apparently most of the Eastern NA population is dependent on human made nesting boxes.
