Hey Birders,
Well today was a really great day. Bird activity continued throughout the
entire day, never really abating. Over 135 species, including at least 28
species of warblers were seen throughout the island. There was a sizeable
southward flight of passerines this morning, lasting until 10am.
Here are the highlights....
Dickcissel - 1 bird flew south off Fish Point at 8am, seen by several observers
Summer Tanager - 1 female at Fish Point
Connecticut Warbler - 1 male at Lighthouse Point
Sedge Wren - 1 bird at Fish Point
Prothonotary Warbler - at least 1 male in the sloughs of Fish Point, another
male was seen and heard at Lighthouse Point
Hooded Warbler - 1 male at Lighthouse Point
Cerulean Warbler - 1 male near the corner of Stone Road and the East-West Road
Yellow-breasted Chat - 1 bird at Fish Point
Lesser Black-backed Gull - 3 first-year birds at Fish Point
Herring X Great Black-backed Gull hybrid - 1 sub-adult at Fish Point - same
bird as yesterday
Northern Mockingbird - 2 birds at Fish Point
Shorebirds are continuing to trickle in, with a sizeable flock off Henderson
Road. Close to 250 Dunlin, 70 Black-bellied Plovers, 4 Semipalmated Plovers, 5
Ruddy Turnstones, 6 Dowitcher sp and 1 Least Sandpiper were seen.
As mentioned above, there was a sizeable flight of birds, heading south from
Fish Point. In total 2159 birds were observed to fly south. Some of the

Results of the 9th annual bird race have come in...albeit alittle late. In
first place were the "Gross-breasted Rosebeaks" with 129 species, led by Rob
Tymstra, Paul Carter and Larry Cornelis. Coming in a fairly close 2nd was J&K,
with 115 species, led by Jerry and Kestrel (12 years old!) DeMarco. A total of
158 species were seen during the 24 hour period.

10 am - 5 pm daily. The foyer contains a 'sightings board' listing May bird
sightings (open 24 hours). Lighthouse Point is on the NE corner of the island,
Sheridan Point on the NW corner, Mill Point on the SE corner, and Fish Point on
the SW corner, due south of the West Dock.
