Well I spent more time today, like about 6 hours, while my car was being serviced, in the park and surrounding areas ... the early morning was quiet (and cold) but the Western Grebe was very co-operative. I first saw in flying flying along the shoreline head west just west of park at 8:35 am. Myself, Mark Fields and several other birder located it off sw of end of furthest point and ways out but clear visible with binocular (this was between 10:30 and 11:00 am). I found a female Harlequin Duck with a small group of Buffleheads off a small parkette on the lake at the of 28th street (about 3 blocks west of the park off Lake Promende). No other birders there in morning seemed to have found the Eared Grebe. There are still at least 600-800 Red-necked Grebes and 20+ Horned Grebes there. The birds in the woods were a little better today ... finding Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers and Northern Flickers and lots more Golden-crowned Kinglets and Brown Creepers than yesterday. There was at least one Northern Rough-winged Swallow with a good scattering of Tree Swallow. Also a group of 5 Bonapart's Gulls was seen around 9:00 am this morning. This place should be hoping birds this weekend with the warm air moving in the south.
