The Common Teal found earlier today at Long Point was present in the wet field this evening until 8:05 pm when everything flew off to the Turkey Pt marsh to the south. The location is, as Rob McKenzie corrected, 5 km east of Forestry Farm Rd. on Norfolk County Hwy 24. More precisely it is the second field on the south side of Hwy 24, 300 metres east of the Charlotteville West 1/4 Line (what we call the Forestville Rd.).
The bird was in the company of about 40 Green-winged Teal, two Gadwall and two Mallards. They were very skittish and flushed when I pulled up in my car. Fortunately they returned to the puddle and continued feeding. I wouldn't recommend getting out of your car if you pay a visit. A scope on a window mount would be ideal. This is the second record for Long Point of Common Teal. The first was present March 27 - Apr. 6, 1990. A Eurasian Wigeon was reported this morning with a large flock of Am. Wigeon in a wet field on the south side of the 2nd Concession Rd. 400 metres east of Cty Rd. 23. The 2nd Concession runs west from Hwy 59 north of Long Pt and Cty Rd 23 is at the western terminus of Concession 2. The family of seven White-fronted Geese was joined by an adult pair over the weekend at Lee Brown WMA and the nine birds were still present there this morning. _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization.
