It's been a good week for raptors locally with all three accipiters seen; a N.
Goshawk at Camden East and a Sharp-shinned Hawk at Bedford Mills on Friday and
a Cooper's Hawk near Inverary on Monday. Red-shouldered Hawks are back in
numbers with reports from Verona, Bedford Mills and the Queen's Biological
Station. Merlins are also at QUBS and Bald Eagles were seen at Devil lake and
Lake Opinicon. There was a Golden Eagle at Frontenac P.P. on Sunday and a N.
Harrier at the Kingston airport on Wednesday.
Waterfowl sightings seem to be dominated by Ring-necked Ducks and Hooded
Mergansers. Wood Ducks were seen at Elginburg and QUBS and there was a N.
Shoveler at the lagoons yesterday. The White-fronted Goose at Sandhurst on
Saturday was not refound. There were 3 Trumpeter Swans at Westport on Sunday.
Common Loons have appeared both on Lake Ontario and in a few of the back lakes
with sufficient open water. Glaucous Gulls were seen at Millhaven and in the
Cataraqui River this week.
There are still many local reports of redpolls and Pine Siskins but a Purple
Finch at Bath yesterday was the first seen this year. Other new arrivals
include E. Phoebes at Sydenham and Perth Road Village on Wednesday, N. Flickers
at Lemoine Pt. and QUBS and a Great Egret at Sir John A. and Dalton Ave. this
morning.
