Most of the past week's news was about geese, geese and MORE geese! At least 6 (possibly more) GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE were present in the area from Carp to Kinburn from the 20th to the 25th, with the most frequent reports from a flooded area of the Carp River between Carp Rd. and Rivington St. at the south edge of the village of Carp. A phenomenal number of Greater SNOW GEESE, perhaps 500,000 or more built up on Lake St. Francis in the St. Lawrence River near Lancaster from the 25th through the 27th; only a small number have so far been seen closer to Ottawa. Four ROSS'S GEESE were in the Carp location on the 25th, and a few CACKLING GEESE were noted here as well. Two adult TRUMPETER SWANS continue to be seen on and off, on the Jock River near the bridge along 9th Line Beckwith west of Ashton as of at least the 27th. The flooding in the fields in the Navan, Bourget and Pendelton areas was still substantial but began receding last week; apart from 1000's of CANADA GEESE very few waterfowl were reported. BALD EAGLES were again spotted in several locations, as were a few ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS and pairs of AMERICAN KESTRELS. Back on the 22nd 4 SANDHILL CRANES were still present along Smith Rd. west of Miltons Rd. near Navan, and a pair of adults was seen from Anderson Rd. near the Mer Bleue wetland. Approx. 100 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS were still at Shirley's Bay on the 24th, as were good numbers of COMMON REDPOLLS. Thank you - Good Birding! _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization.
