This afternoon around 4:30, my wife Lynn and I were crossing the 2nd
line bridge over the Grand River and stopped to look at some Common
Goldeneyes and see what else might be around. I spotted what I
tentatively identified as a Harlequin Duck. A quick phone call to Dan
Eusebi and Marleen Castellan revealed that they were in the area, and
both stopped by to have a look, agreeing with the identification. A
call to Rick and Kim Brown in Fergus had them out to the river within
5 minutes, and a consensus was reached that a fine specimen of a
Harlequin Duck was indeed on the Grand.
The bird was seen on the upstream side of the 2nd Line bridge, which
is the first road crossing of the river downstream of the Shand Dam,
northeast of Fergus. It was spending a fair bit of its time hanging
out with a pair of Goldeneyes.
