Red-winged Blackbirds have moved into the Kingston area this week. Several
arrived last Sunday with 24 at a Barriefield feeder being the largest group. By
yesterday they were widespread and abundant. Am Robins are also much easier to
find but a major influx has yet to occur. There were also 2 Rusty Blackbirds at
an Elginburg feeder on Sunday.
Common Redpolls have been overwhelming this week with many feeders reporting
over a 150 birds. The number of Pine Siskins is also up, but not to the levels
of earlier this winter. Interestingly, two feeders had Snow Buntings drop in; 6
near Bellrock last Friday and 20 at Bedford Mills on Sunday.
A Sharp-shinned Hawk has been at Bedford Mills all week and a Rough-legged Hawk
was seen near Inverary last Saturday. Bald Eagles continue to be seen on the
lakes north of Kingston and there was a group of four eagles including a Golden
on the Rideau Canal near Joyceville on Monday. Another "out in the open in
broad daylight" Barred Owl was sitting on a telephone wire on Montreal Street
just north of the 401 last Friday. The N. Hawk Owl north of Kingston was last
seen a week ago and the "bird of the week" was a Gyrfalcon on Wolfe Island on
Wednesday.
