Good morning Ontbirders,

Canadian Migration Monitoring Network (CMMN) stations across the country,
many of which are in Ontario, are looking for birders and banders who are
interested in gaining the experience of a lifetime volunteering or working
for the birds. Visit the CMMN web-site -
http://www.birdscanada.org/volunteer/cmmn/ for more information about
stations near you and opportunities offered. Population trends, seasonal
abundance graphs, and other summary statistics from the CMMN are available
from Nature Counts at www.naturecounts.ca.

Bird Studies Canada's Long Point Bird Observatory (LPBO) and Thunder Cape
Bird Observatory (TCBO) are accepting applications for numerous volunteer
opportunities available for the migration monitoring program, breeding bird
census project, and Tree Swallow research projects. LPBO is also offering a
new Internship position for more experienced individuals. For more
information about the volunteer opportunities or the Internship visit Bird
Studies Canada's job opportunities page - www.birdscanada.org/about/jobs or
contact LPBO at [email protected]. In 2010, LPBO's migration monitoring
program banded 30, 489 birds of 161 species bringing the grand total to
833,072 of 268 species banded since the observatory was founded in 1960. The
countdown to the one millionth bird banded at LPBO begins. Details and
highlights from the migration season and programs are available on our
Sightings Board or the LPBO E-news accessible at -
www.birdscanada.org/longpoint.

The Long Point Bird Observatory is also looking for keen teen birders to
apply for the 2011 Doug Tarry Natural History Fund - Young Ornithologist
Workshop to be held from Friday, July 29 to Sunday, August 7. Participants
will receive hands-on training in field ornithology including bird banding,
censusing, field identification, birding trips, preparing museum specimens,
guest lectures, and more! Six of Canada's most promising ornithologists
between the ages of 13-17 will be selected to attend, and will receive the
Doug Tarry Bird Study Award to cover all on-site expenses. For those
traveling long distances, special grants may also be available to help
offset air travel costs. Applications are due April 15, 2011. For more
information and an application form, contact us at [email protected], or
visit www.birdscanada.org/longpoint.

Don't hesitate to contact me privately if you have any questions.

Good birding,

Stu
