Hi,
Cold weather froze even the largest lakes in Haliburton County before the
count. Waterfowl were restricted to those few species that winter on the Gull
River and in open water below dams and falls. No Belted Kingfishers were seen,
a regular species on the Minden count.
Only two species recorded new highs, Rock Pigeon 170 (166) and Bald Eagle 8
(4).
Evening Grosbeak numbers were up from recent years with large flocks at a
few feeders. (One feeder in Haliburton Village outside the count circle has
150 regularly.) A very few large flocks (40 to 70 birds) of common redpolls
were spotted, but none visiting feeders yet.
The only other “winter” finch recorded was American Goldfinch with small
numbers visiting a few feeders.
39 species have been reported so far. No lower number has been reported
since 1988.

                                Dennis Barry, Compiler 905-725-2116
