Today met Charles Smith and Stan Long as we viewed the Painted Bunting at 9.50
am at the feeder at James Turland's home. We then drove to Port Elgin where a
long search produced no Barnacle Goose but we did see 2 Green-winged Teal and a
male Redhead at the ponds, 2 Bald Eagles, an adult Thayers and a 1st-winter
Glaucous Gull along the bay.
In Southampton harbour, a Red-throated Loon swam close to the wall.
Collingwood harbour was full of waterfowl including all 3 mergansers, 3 swan
species, 11 Red-necked Grebes and a Common Loon. On the granary were a
Peregrine Falcon and a Raven.
Near dusk we found 3 Northern Harriers north of Angus. We counted 164 Sandhill
Cranes flying off the cornfields to roost in Minesing Swamp.
Many thanks to Simon and Mr. Turland for their kind hospitality in James'
absence (he was at Niagara).
Directions : Painted Bunting visits feeders at 28 King Street north in
Kincardine. All other sites mentioned are off Highways 21 and 26 around the
edge of Lake Huron/Georgian Bay.
