Greetings Ontbirders
I went to Gull Island (Presqu'ile Prov.Park) this morning with Sarah
Petrasek and we located 5 Purple Sandpipers feeding on broken
shoreline rocks on Sebastopol Pt. (the small island N of Gull Is. with
the big willow bush on it). Despite being on the side that faces Gull
Is., the birds were incredibly hard to spot in the rocks. We waded
over to Sebastopol in water slightly above knee deep and had much
better looks at them. Also on the Gull Island were 4 Dunlin, about 20
American Pipit, and what was most likely a Savannah Sparrow but didn't
get good enough looks to be sure. Lots of waterfowl (Long-tails,
Bufflehead, Goldeneye) around the islands but nothing unusual. The
male Eurasian Wigeon that has been around for several weeks now, was
visible in a nice mixed flock of puddle ducks just offshore from the
campground office.
Cheers,
Doug McRae
Directions: Presqu'ile Park is south of Brighton, on the shore of
Lake Ontario. From Hwy. 401, take the Brighton exit and travel south
into town. From there follow the park signs to Presqu'ile. The Park
Tabloid newspaper at the gate has maps of the places within the park.
