Weather: Cloudy and cool with light SW winds turning S 8-10 km/hr in the afternoon. High of 10C. Raptor Observations: A small flight Red-tails and Vultures with a few Sharp-shins, Cooper's Hawks, and Harriers in the mix. Nearly all of the Vultures passed by in one large kettle in the morning with only small groups the rest of the day. Most of the Red-tails were moving well to the north and just above tree top level while some were perching in the trees for brief periods before soaring up and continuing west. All 3 juv. Golden Eagles moved through at the north edge of the marsh within 45 mins. of each other in the 12-1 DST hour. Also a late Osprey was observed soaring low over the marsh in the afternoon, but didn't pass through (and therefore was not count), and perhaps was one locals lingering from the nest in Amherstburg. Non-raptor Observations: About 120 Rusty Blackbirds and a Wilson's Snipe put on a good show with the former foraging in a frenzy in the water/muck/sticks/leaves at the edge of the pond. Chickadee numbers have dropped a bit from the last few weeks with only 56 tallied. Three Tree Swallows went by heading west in the afternoon, while Winter Wren, Fox Sparrow, and E. Phoebe were down around the tower. Predictions: Partly cloudy with a 30% chance of showers in the afternoon. Wind NW becoming N 20 km/hr with a high of 11C. Should be a decent flight given the northerly winds if the rain holds off in the afternoon. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Jim Pawlicki ([email protected]) Holiday Beach Migration Observatory information may be found at: http://hbmo.org/ _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization.
