Yesterday, Tyler Hoar sent me a note that Dan Kaczynski had seen an orange wing-tagged egret (#14A) in the SE corner of Cranberry Marsh that morning. I went to the east viewing platform at Cranberry this morning, arriving about 30 minutes before sunrise, hoping to find it roosting in the trees bordering the marsh; it wasn't there. However, at 730, about 10 minutes after sunrise, an egret arrived and landed in the north end of the marsh. It had orange wing-tags, though from that platform I could not see the characters on the tags. I presume it was the same 14A...as there are not many egrets around any more. I believe the egret arrived from the west. I have unconfirmed reports that earlier this fall there were egrets roosting along Duffin's Creek near Corner Marsh. If anyone can confirm that, I'd be most appreciative. As I do not live in the immediate area, I'd also be grateful if birders in the area might watch for the bird and report any sightings to me directly...also check out possible roosting along Duffin's Creek.
Thanks, Chip Weseloh Directions: From Highway 401 in Whitby, take the Salem Road exit south to Bayly St., go east until you come to Lynde Shores Conservation Area. Park your vehicle and hike down the road going south from the parking lot. After 10-12 minutes you'll come to two paths breaking off to the right (west). Take the 2nd one - it goes to a metal viewing platform which gives a good view of the marsh. The first one goes to a wooden tower but you can not get a clear view of thre marsh from it. Good luck! _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization.
