Sizing up a Cackling Goose this am against a background of ducks
I realized it was the same size as a Mallard - so for the second time
in 5 years a member of the previously named Minimus race from
western Canada has shown up at the pond.
In the past week, a juvenile Golden Plover stayed, well-hidden in the
grass of the NW boomerang for 3 days while a pair of Baird's Sand-
pipers and a Semi-plamated Sandpiper hung about on the same
ground. Both species of Yellowlegs and Blue and Green-winged Teal
are regulars as are DC Cormorants while a Pied-billed Grebe still
frequents the weeds. Wilson's Snipe show as well.
GBHs and a solitary Great Egret shows up most mornings and a flight
of 40-50 American Pipits set down for a brief stopover last Monday
afternoon. There's lots of migrating sparrows in the herbiage along
the shore and a Bald Eagle flew screaming overhead this am.
But, so far, only one Dunlin, a non-breeding adult has been noted.
Reesor Pond lies just north of Hwy 407 on Reesor Road in Markahm.
