Visitors:
Bill Boid, Tom Stewart were at the site again...and it was great to see OFO
group down to visit (Sorry...we didn't get everyone's names) and of course
it's too bad that the raptors didn't cooperate while they were on the knoll
with the counters! My thanks to these folks for helping pick up a lot of
the passerines reported today. :)
Weather:
Winds were light to moderate from the W initially then swinging WNW to NW.
Very cloudy for most of the day...with some breaks out to sunshine. Temp
much cooler today with a high to 16C.
Raptor Observations:
A decent flight despite not the best weather conditions. The total for the
day was 578 birds. There were actually a couple of small kettles of
Broadwings today...a few stragglers that didn't move out with the bulk of
that species over the past couple of weeks. Last 2 birds of the day were
Peregrines.
Non-raptor Observations:
As the front passed last night, Hawk Cliff observers said "good-bye" to
yesterday's hot humid conditions and "hello" to a whole new batch of
migrants giving us a species total of 51 songbirds today. The additional
coverage provided by weekend birders is also a big help in boosting the
number and variety of other bird and wildlife species that are seen at Hawk
Cliff. Today's "early birds" spotted a couple of white-tailed deer, a
raccoon, a fox pup and 200 migrating BLUE JAYS before 8:00 AM (people
time). Other first-hour highlights were BROWN CREEPER, CAROLINA WREN,
WOOD DUCK, 3 RUBY THROATED HUMMINGBIRDSÂ and 11 COMMON LOONS.
Â
Today's warbler count totalled 12 species including a nice warbler wave
late in the morning right at the mound. WILSON'S & CANADA WARBERS were
among today's highlights. In addition, the new arrivals were GRAY-CHEEKED
THRUSH and DARK=EYED JUNCO. Still migrating are small numbers of BARN &
TREE SWALLOWS as well as CHIMNEY SWIFTS. A great day all around!
Predictions:
Sunday is predicted to have NE winds at 10kph...with a mix of sun and
cloud. Typical good hawkwatching weather.
