Hi all,

While conducting a survey last night in Aberfoyle (south of Guelph) I had a
Northern Saw-shet Owl respond to the playback of Barred Owl calls. It called
repeatedly for close to 5 minutes. The habitat in the area seems suitable,
however, hearing the distant roar of Hwy 401 always makes me think twice.

Of course, owl surveys are not usually conducted this late in the season but I
was following-up on an August 2009 observation of a Barred Owl (documented with
photos) from the same location and thought why not give it a try and see what
happens. This was a bit of surprise for sure. Neither species is regularly
encountered breeding much further south in Ontario.

Cheers,

Karl Konze
Guelph, Ontario

PS. I never did get a Barred Owl to respond.
