Both these birds were discovered late yesterday evening and are still present this morning, Friday, June 4th. A breeding-plumaged Eared Grebe is swimming in Cobourg harbour, very close to the parking lot on the west side. Directions: Leave Hwy.401 at Exit 474 and drive south on Division Street which ends at the harbour. Drive round the north edge of the harbour to the parking lot on the west side.
A Reeve was found in a manmade pond on Calnan Road east of Grafton yesterday evening and was well seen again there this morning. This pond has had good shorebird habitat all spring. The Reeve has been frequenting the mudflats on the north shore of the pond. It is easily visible, especially with a scope, from Calnan Road where it was seen this morning at 7.30 - please stay on the road and do not stray onto the farmer's land. Also present are many Wood Ducks, 3 Great Egrets, Semipalmated Plovers and other common shorebirds. Directions: If coming from Cobourg you can drive east along Hwy. 2, King Street, from its downtown junction with Division Street. Grafton is about 10km east of Cobourg, with Calnan Road running south from Hwy.2 about 2km east of Grafton - unfortunately Calnan isn't shown on the MapArt Road Atlas but is about 0.5 km east of Shelter Valley Road which is. The pond is only 200m south of Hwy.2 on the east side of Calnan Road. Alternatively, you can access Grafton from Exit 487 on Hwy.401, drive south to Hwy.2 and then east from there.
