Hi all. This message is meant mainly for Ottawa area birders who wonder if it is worth visiting the Eastern lagoons these days.
I toured the Embrun, St-Albert and Casselman lagoons yesterday, to check the situation with migrating shorebirds. Good habitat at all lagoons. Lots of shorebirds at Embrun and St-Albert lagoons, but mainly Least Sandpipers. Casselman only had Kildirs and Spotted Sandpipers. At Embrun, in addition to 50+ Least Sandpipers, there were 3 Wilson Phalaropes (they have been there for weeks - all look like females, males might be incubating), 1 greater and 3 Lesser Yellowlegs, Kildirs and Spotted Sandpipers, and regular ducks including Shoveler and Wood. St-Albert had at least 100+ Least Sandpipers, 1 Dunlin, Kildirs and Spotted Sandpipers, at least one Semipalmated Sandpiper among a large flock seen far away in poor light in the South-East lagoon, and also regular ducks including Shoveler and Wood. Willow flycatchers in song near that S-E lagoon. Last year, there were great sightings at Embrun and St-Albert at the end of May, following bad weather.
