On Friday, Jan 15, my wife and I made our first trip to Amherst I.,
taking the 10:30 AM ferry. In the water near to the ferry dock at
Millhaven we saw the male Hooded Merganser mentioned by others, as
well as a forlorn-looking Coot. Lots of Mallrd, Black Duck,
Goldeneyes, Long-tailed Ducks, and Mergansers were on the channel
where it was open. On Amherst I. we did see the Boreal Owl (our
target bird) with the help of other birders and one of the 2 Snowy
Owls on the KFN sanctuary. Along with all the many Chickadees at the
Owl Woods feeders were several Goldfinches and 2 or 3 Am. Tree
Sparrows. Flying over the middle of the island was a dark morph Rough-
legged Hawk.
Waiting for the 1:00 PM ferry to return we spotted an immature Bald
Eagle over near Millhaven which flew east and disappeared below the
tree-horizon around Amherstview. A little later, when the ferry was
about 500 m out from Amherst I. we spotted a mature Bald Eagle flying
westward near the island shore; it landed in a tree 2-3 km west of
the island dock.
The Hooded Merganser and Coot were waiting for us when we arrived
back at Millhaven.
