On Friday, December 4th, 2009, this is the HNC Birding Report: GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE SNOW GOOSE BARROW'S GOLDENEYE ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK
Brant Cackling Goose Tundra Swan Canvasback Redhead Surf Scoter Black Scoter Long-tailed Duck Bufflehead Common Goldeneye Common x Barrow's Goldeneye Hooded Merganser Red-throated Loon Common Loon Horned Grebe Red-necked Grebe Great Blue Heron Black-crowned Night-Heron Turkey Vulture Bald Eagle Northern Goshawk American Coot Glaucous Gull Great Black-backed Gull Yellow-billed Cuckoo (Week before last) Snowy Owl Tufted Titmouse Yellow-rumped Warbler Fox Sparrow Snow Bunting Its winter listing season and although temperatures have been warm here during November and one would think that some birds would still be about, it seems that the birds which remain here are typical for this time of year save one or two species. A change in temperature and possible snow this week could drive things into feeders so keep your feeders stocked. Last weekend a ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK continued to be present at a feeder in south Burlington. This bird has not been seen in the winter listing period. I will repost if it is found. Of note for the week before was a Yellow-billed Cuckoo at Confederation Park. Unfortunately this bird was not refound. As typical for this time of year, the list is loaded with waterfowl. A BARROW'S GOLDENEYE was seen off L.P. Sayers Park in Stoney Creek on Tuesday. Also present off Grays Road were two Common x Barrow's Goldeneye hybrids. Other species seen out here include Surf and Black Scoter, Long-tailed Duck, Bufflehead and Common Goldeneye. Moving around the shore, two Brant are still present off Spencer Smith Park as of yesterday. Down at Burloak Park, Common Loons and Red-necked Grebes can be ticked off the winter list. Ducks are also present on the bay, a little variety here with the presence of Tundra Swans, Canvasback, Redhead, Hooded Merganser, Red-throated Loon and Horned Grebe. American Coots are back at LaSalle and a couple of Black-crowned Night-Herons are hanging in at the east end of LaSalle Park. Our first of season Glaucous Gull made a flyby past Canada Centre for Inland Waters and Great Black-backed Gulls are increasing in number. With the colder weather, more gulls should be showing up here on the Hamilton Bay. Up in Saltfleet last weekend a Snowy Owl made an appearance at 11th and Highland Road. A Northern Goshawk flew over the same area. On 2nd Road East at Mud Street, a Cackling Goose made an appearance in a flock of Canada's. Continuing on the goose theme, a flock of SNOW GEESE flew over Guelph on Monday and sometime later the same observer had a group of eight GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE over the Glanbrook Landfill. In the odds and sods a Fox Sparrow was seen along the pipeline at Shell Park halfway between the bottom and Rebecca. A small flock of Yellow-rumped Warblers were seen near Brantford. A Snow Bunting flew past Woodland Cemetery. A group of 80 Tundra Swans were present in the Cootes Paradise on Tuesday. A Great Blue Heron was seen flying over Tollgate Ponds. A Turkey Vulture was seen flying over North Halton a first December record there for a winter lister. A Tufted Titmouse is coming into a feeder in South Burlington. Please send your sightings along for those who are winter listing. Hopefully something comes up during this weekend to send winter listers running.
