There was a Cackling Goose today among the several hundred Canadas at Pt Stanley sewage ponds. This was not one of the extremely tiny birds such as breed on Baffin Island and are sometimes seen in southern Ontario. It was somewhat more intermediate in size, like ssp hutchinsii from breeding areas on the west coast of Hudson Bay and elsewhere. The short stubby bill and steeply inclined forehead were distinctive and the mantle was greyer than on the large Canadas which appeared browner, mostly maxima but including at least a few ssp interior I think. Also the Greater White-fronted Goose is still present, some days at least.
The sewage works are west of Pt Stanley, 1 km on Lake Line then 1 km nw on Scotch Rd. Paul Prevett
