Jim Skene phoned to tell me of 3 more hours put in at Cranberry on Sep.14,
in
which he, Tyler Hoar and Marty Allinson added 34 more hawks, incl a juvenile
NORTHERN GOSHAWK
Below is an updated version for the day.
Cranberry Marsh
sw Whitby, Ontario, Canada--south roadside parking area on Hall's Rd.
Monday, Sep.14/09
Observation time: 0730-1200, 1200-1500EDT
Official Counter: Doug Lockrey, Jim Skene
Observers: Jim Skene, Dan Kaczynski, Karl Jennewein, Jean Iron, Charlie
Adey, Ron Stephenson, Joe Noordman, Jim McKnight, Steve Woods,
Tyler Hoar, Marty Allinson and 10+ others
Weather:
overcast replaced by sunny with cloud patches; light-medium W, then NW
winds,
Bar.pr.101.6 rising, TUV=2, 20C
Many of us arrived with great anticipation of a reasonable hawk flight,
but the
predicted good NW wind did not materialize. Indeed, Steve, "our"
weather-man
suggested that the Broad-wingeds may take inland routes over the next 2
weeks or so.
We did enjoy the antics of a pair of Peregrine Falcons, one of which
remained
perched across the wetland for over an hour.
Migrating Raptor Observations:
3 turkey vulture, 6 Osprey, 21 Sharp-shinned, 2 Red-tailed, 36 Am.Kestrel,
2 Peregrine falcons, 1 Cooper's, 1 N.Goshawk, 1 Merlin, 5 Unidentifieds.
Non-raptor Observations: marsh wren, 6+ hummingbirds, Wilson's
warbler, PALM WARBLER, black-&-white warbler, Am.redstart, chestnut-sided
warbler,
GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLET, rose-breasted grosbeak, 2 GREAT EGRETS,
common yellowthroat, BLACK-THROATED GREEN WARBLER, YELLOW WARBLER,
NORTHERN PARULA, swamp sparrow, Philadelphia vireo, red-eyed vireo,
warbling vireo, NASHVILLE WARBLER, catbird, cedar waxwings, among others.
Monarch Butterflies--5
From the 401 eastbound, exit at Salem Rd. in Ajax, south to Bayly, then
east through LakeRidge Rd. to the first street beyond--Hall's Rd.--south
toward the lake to the second roadside parking area.
