Visitors:
Approximately 68 visitors to the Tower today. Maybe a third to half of
these for hawkwatching purposes. Group of regulars included Bob Pettit,
Steve Winiarski, Jim McCoy, Carmen and Wayne Hudson, Olga Klekner, Roland
Klekner, Sarah Ruppert, and Caroline Staddon. Bob Hall-Brooks was banding
passerines while Gary and Dorothy Balkwill were banding raptors.
Weather:
Clear skies with some haze early then becoming partly cloudy later. North
to southwest winds at 0 to 7 mph. Very warm with lots of sun driving temps.
from 14 to 28C. Visibility good and close to 30 km from mid-AM on.
Raptor Observations:
Flight shifted North well away from the Lake Erie shoreline when the winds
turned onshore, primarily Southwest. Despite this, we were treated to
another respectable flight of Sharpies and Kestrels. I suspect that we
missed a number of Broadwing kettles to the North today.
Non-raptor Observations:
10 species of waterfowl,
Black-crowned Night-heron- 2,
Bald Eagle- 4 locals,
Shorebirds included Killdeer (25+), Greater(1) and Lesser(3) Yellowlegs,
Soliatary(2) and Pectoral(3) Sandpipers, S-b Dowitcher(2), and Wilson's
Snipe(2).
Ruby-throated Hummingbird- 42,
Chimney Swift- 45+,
Eastern Wood-Pewee- 1,
Purple Martin- 1,
Blue Jay- 2,015+
Sizeable morning flight of warblers. Small flock moving through in the
morning, which included American Redstart, Nashville, Tennessee, Yellow,
Black-and-white, Magnolia, Chestnut-sided, Yellow-rumped, Black-throated
Green, Black-throated Blue, Blackburnian, and Wilson's Warblers.
Cedar Waxwing- 200,
Purple Finch- 8,
American Goldfinch- 280,
Other:
Monarch- 30,
Few dragonflies today.
Predictions:
Unseasonably warm conditions continue. Clear skies with few clouds.
North-northwest to west winds around 5 mph. High of 28C.
