Here in Windsor the outdoor workers have been on strike for over seven
weeks now, leaving the city parks in grass about 50 cm high. Today
(June 5th) at around 9 a.m. I was riding my bike at the Ford Test Track
park, which is normally mowed for soccer and baseball games. I heard
a familiar call, and turned and looked to see a male Bobolink singing.
On the other side of the track, I heard an Eastern Meadowlark and a
Savannah Sparrow singing. None of these birds would be present in the
groomed park, at least in the past five years that I have lived in Windsor.
It does indicate how quickly an area can return to appropriate bird
habitat...
